Fisheries Management

Fisheries Management is the creation and enforcement of rules to prevent overfishing of stocks and help overfished stocks replenish

The aims of fisheries management is to produce biological, social and economic benefits from aquatic resources.

It is an integrated process involving information gathering, analysis, planning, consultation, decision making, allocating resources and the  formulation, implementation and enforcement of regulations or rules

(FAO FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries)

Fishermen can participate in all these processes

We aim to show the principles of management, how it is relevant within the UK context and enable fishermen to recognise how and when they will be able to get involved in the management process.

See our page on the Fisheries Management Plans (FMPs) to gain insights and advice on participating in FMPs

WE WOULD LIKE TO FEATURE SOME CASE STUDIES IN FISHERIES MANAGEMENT ON THIS PAGE,
GET IN TOUCH TO TELL US ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE UP TO

Wild fish stock are our of our control, they do not recognise the same international borders as us

we humans on the other hand can be very good at adapting our behaviour to counteract any measure which might be put upon us

beyond stocks – ecosystem and habitat

Fisheries management must consider mitigating impacts of on the ecoystem including: fishery collapse; loss of employment; habitat loss and protection of species

ICES considers ecosystem-based management (EBM) as the most effective way of managing the human activities which impact marine ecosystems within the context of fisheries

Management actions designed to
protect natural habitats and species

Looking to the future – how should we chart our course?
